A Journey Beyond the Competition Stage
Black & White Coffee Roasters was built upon a foundation of excellence, first pushing the boundaries of coffee flavor on the competition stage. It started in 2016 when Lem Butler won the United States Barista Championship in Atlanta, Georgia. Kyle Ramage coached him through his World Barista Championship routine, and Lem placed 4th that year in Dublin, Ireland.
Roles were reversed the next year as Kyle competed in - and won - the US Barista Championship with coaching support from Lem. Following his national victory, Kyle represented the USA at the World Barista Championship in Seoul, South Korea and made it all the way to the finals, placing 6th overall. Later that year the collaboration between Lem and Kyle led them from the competition stage to coffee bar, when they opened Black & White Coffee Roasters.

Through his title as US Barista Champion and cofounder of Black & White, Kyle has developed these relationships further, supporting the work of innovative producers by featuring their coffees on Black & White’s coffee menu.
